A parliamentary commission established following the war came up with the recommendation for school Gold Coast Vouchers that looked very similar to some of the proposals that are now being floated in the United States. It was defeated, and never made its way to the chamber of deputies for debate, because of the strong anti-clerical feeling in France. There was a hangover from the French Revolution which said, in essence, we don’t want taxpayer money going to religious schools. They were primarily concerned about Catholic schools, which represent the largest number of sectarian schools in the United States, as well.
